A Stoneline Heritage case study

Restoring a Victorian house façade in Balmain

Stoneline Heritage cleaned and tuckpointed the red brick front of a Victorian house in Balmain and rebuilt the sills under the front windows. The sill moulding was copied from a similar house to continue the Victorian character of the street.

01 / The project story

Understanding the condition

The brick sills under the front windows were worn and had been painted. The brickwork across the front needed cleaning and repointing.

02 / The project story

A considered approach

The sill moulding was based on a similar house, so the new sills would continue the Victorian character of the street. The profile was sketched by hand from that house. A template was then cut from galvanised steel to the same profile and mounted on plywood, so the profile could be reproduced on site.

03 / The project story

The work carried out

The brick sills under the front windows were rebuilt. Timber guide battens were fixed along each sill, and the template was run along them to form the profile in place. The brickwork was then cleaned, repointed in matching red and finished with white tuckpointing.

04 / The outcome

Care that carries forward.

The new sills are pale against the cleaned red brick, and the white joints define the brickwork. The porch, with its arched brick recess and Victorian tessellated tiles, sits within a front that now matches the character of the street.
