Our project experience reflects our practical understanding of heritage buildings, natural stone, historic masonry and conservation-led repair methods.

The projects below include works where our team participated in various capacities, including as specialist subcontractors, technical contributors or material/application specialists. Our involvement may relate to selected stages or specific restoration tasks rather than overall ownership of the entire project.

Across all projects, our approach remains the same: understand the substrate, select compatible materials and preserve as much original fabric as possible.

Martin Place Sandstone Façade Cleaning

Project overview

Sandstone façades in high-traffic urban environments are often affected by atmospheric pollution, soot, dust, surface staining and previous contamination. Cleaning these surfaces requires careful method selection to avoid damaging the original stone or introducing unnecessary moisture into the substrate.

This project involved the cleaning of historic sandstone elements in a sensitive CBD setting where conventional high-pressure washing or aggressive cleaning methods were not suitable.

Our involvement

Our team used a specialist waterless peel-off cleaning system to remove accumulated grime and surface contamination from the sandstone.

The cleaning paste was applied to the stone surface, allowed to bind with contaminants and then removed once cured. This method helped reduce the need for water, minimise runoff and protect the porous sandstone substrate.

The objective was to clean the stone carefully while preserving its natural character, texture and appearance.

St Stephen's Uniting Church Façade Works

Project overview

St Stephen's Uniting Church is a prominent heritage church located in Sydney's CBD. Its street-facing façade includes historic masonry, decorative architectural detailing and leadlight window surrounds exposed to ongoing urban weathering.

The project involved targeted conservation works to address deteriorated mortar joints and preserve the appearance and performance of the façade.

Our involvement

Our team carried out selected masonry restoration and repointing works to the eastern façade.

Works included careful removal of deteriorated mortar, preparation of joints and repointing using compatible mineral-based restoration mortars. Particular care was taken around architectural details and window surrounds to ensure the repair work remained sympathetic to the original masonry.

The aim was to stabilise and protect the façade while maintaining its historic appearance.

North Sydney Olympic Pool Redevelopment

Project overview

The North Sydney Olympic Pool is one of Sydney's most recognisable public landmarks. Originally opened in 1936, the site includes significant Art Deco elements and exposed waterfront structures affected by age, weathering and a marine environment.

As part of the broader redevelopment, heritage-sensitive restoration and protection works were required to help preserve the character of the structure while supporting its long-term performance.

Our involvement

Our team participated in selected restoration and structural protection works associated with the project.

Works included concrete and masonry remediation, treatment of deteriorated surfaces and the application of specialist protective systems to vulnerable building elements. Particular care was taken around decorative and heritage-sensitive areas, including stucco details, masonry surfaces and exposed façade elements.

The works required materials and methods suited to harsh coastal conditions, including breathable protective treatments designed to reduce water ingress while allowing vapour movement through the substrate.

St Jude's Anglican Church Historic Lime Rendering

Project overview

St Jude's Anglican Church is a historic church building in the Southern Highlands, where traditional finishes form an important part of the building's character and appearance.

The project required the use of breathable, heritage-appropriate materials compatible with the existing building fabric.

Our involvement

Our team carried out historic lime rendering and limewash works.

The works were undertaken using traditional lime-based materials selected to support vapour permeability and moisture movement through the building fabric. Particular attention was given to surface preparation, material compatibility and achieving a finish sympathetic to the historic character of the church.

The objective was to provide a breathable, traditional finish that respects the building's original materials and appearance.

Cultural Heritage Substrate Conservation Trials

Research project with a Queensland university

Project overview

Stoneline Heritage Restoration was invited to participate in a research project led by a Queensland university, focused on the conservation of culturally significant rock surfaces in remote Australian conditions.

The project is concerned with understanding how the natural stone substrate supporting Indigenous rock art can be stabilised and preserved over time. The painted surfaces themselves are not treated or altered. Instead, the research focuses on the surrounding and supporting rock material, where deterioration of the substrate may affect the long-term preservation of the site.

Due to the cultural significance and sensitivity of the work, the project requires a careful, respectful and research-led approach, with all proposed methods assessed before any broader application is considered.

Our involvement

Our role involves technical input and material testing for low-impact conservation methods suitable for fragile stone substrates.

Trial works may include testing mineral consolidants for weakened rock surfaces, assessing waterless cleaning systems for surrounding substrate areas and reviewing breathable protective treatments that may help reduce weathering while allowing the stone to continue behaving naturally.

The objective is to support the long-term preservation of the stone substrate while avoiding intervention to the painted surfaces and respecting the cultural, historical and material significance of the site.
